Confronting Stuttering, Incarceration, and Rebirth
The Path to Acceptance and Redemption.
When Maya first heard Jay Jordan speak about how his criminal record and how it barred him from every single industry, she reached out to him on LinkedIn to set up a meeting to learn how she can help. She didn’t know at the time that Jay Jordan is a lifelong stutterer, just like her.
In this film effort that spans Jay’s life - from being sentenced to 7 years in prison to life after incarceration, our team of filmmakers takes on a story that intersects stuttering, family, faith, bullying, racism, incarceration, and life after getting out. How is it that stuttering is still mocked, stigmatized, and misunderstood? In a society where misconceptions about stuttering and stigmas around criminal records persist, storytelling becomes a powerful tool to shift narratives and foster empathy.
As the disability pride movement gains momentum, this film is important to challenge misconceptions and celebrate stuttering. True awareness demands advocacy from both individuals who stutter and their fluent counterparts to dispel damaging assumptions and foster genuine acceptance.
